Box Breathing
A rhythmic 4-4-4-4 breathing pattern used by Navy SEALs to stay calm under pressure.
About This Exercise
Box Breathing (also called square breathing) is a regulated breathing technique used to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve focus. Each side of the "box" lasts 4 seconds: inhale, hold, exhale, hold.
What It Helps With
- Acute stress and anxiety reduction
- Pre-performance calming (exams, presentations, competitions)
- Improving focus and concentration
- Sleep preparation
The Science
Controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the vagus nerve — shifting the body from fight-or-flight toward rest-and-digest. The breath holds create mild CO2 buildup, which has a calming effect on the respiratory center. Box breathing is used in military special operations, surgical teams, and high-performance sports.
